The filter goes between your shower arm and your shower head. You won't need tools, a plumber, or any parts beyond what's in the box.
Before you start
Check that your shower head unscrews from the arm or hose. Almost all UK fixed heads and handheld hoses use a standard ½" (G1/2) thread, which is what the filter fits. If your shower head is moulded into the wall or into an electric shower unit with no accessible thread, the filter won't fit.
Step 1 — Remove the shower head
Turn the shower off. Unscrew the head anticlockwise by hand. If it's been on a while it may be stiff; a cloth wrapped around it gives you grip without scratching the chrome. Keep the old rubber washer — you'll need it.
Step 2 — Tape the threads
Wrap the supplied PTFE tape three or four times clockwise around the thread on the shower arm. Clockwise matters: wrapped the other way the tape unwinds as you screw the filter on.
Step 3 — Fit the filter
Screw the filter onto the shower arm clockwise, hand-tight. Don't use a wrench — overtightening is the most common way to damage the seal. The filter's inlet is the end with the recessed thread.
Step 4 — Refit the shower head
Tape the filter's outlet thread the same way, seat a washer, and screw your shower head back on hand-tight.
Step 5 — Flush it through
Run the shower on cold for 30–60 seconds. Some fine carbon dust from the new cartridge is normal on first use and clears quickly. Check the joints for drips — if you see one, turn the water off, back the fitting off and add another wrap or two of tape.
Replacing the cartridge
Turn the shower off, unscrew the bottom of the housing by hand, lift the old cartridge out, drop the new one in the same way up and screw the housing back together. About a minute, and you don't need to remove the filter from the shower arm.
